Beckham Can’t Save the MLS…Or Get a Glass of Wine Apparently

Tags: , ,

soccerati_da-hasselbaink_david-beckhamYeah, David Beckham’s an international celebrity, but in LA he’s just another dude with a nice haircut and well-tanned trophy wife. Or so says a new book by SI writer Grant Wahl.

In The Beckham Experiment, Wahl chronicles Beck’s time in Los Angeles, and apparently that time included D.B. being denied a glass of wine because he failed to produce a valid ID. Shocking!

In all seriousness, the book does provide some juicy insights like Beckham’s icy relationship with teammate Landon Donovan and an alleged “shadow takeover” of the Galaxy by the English international’s management company 19 Entertainment.

Double shocking!

Hasselbaink I’m watching you oh yes I’m watching you. Nice win today. You bastard. On a serious side, was the Beckham experiment an indication of the gulf between the sporting cultures of Europe and the U.S.? Or is Beckham another spoiled sport superstar?

I’m assuming the above was a typo (since corrected) … but still, funny.

I will hardly call that leathery bag of bones with two turn lane bumps keeping food from traveling towards her mouth a “Trophy Wife”.

Beckham, like many things British, hasn’t been able to get the USA to completely understand how special he is.

Yes his shirt is a top seller and yes the attendance is many times higher when he comes to town, but it’s not like the people in LA really give a shit about an aging pretty boy who has virtually no talent that they can tap to benefit themselves.

He can barely talk. He’s got no personality. And he’s not even creative on the field. He does two things well: Crosses & Set Pieces. They’ve very important in the game of soccer, but he plays a more central role for the Galaxy, so he doesn’t even cross that much.

This was supposed to be a criticism of someone complimenting his wife, but he’s such a boring shell of a person as well that I couldn’t help but lash out at him too.
