Anti-Chelsea Postgame at The Lodge

August 1st, 2009 by Danieldinho | No Comments | Filed in English Premier League, International Play, Soccerati TV

Where better to celebrate a victory drown your sorrows than at a tiddie bar filled with fans of the team you were unsuccessfully rooting against? Add multiple vodka tonics and a penchant for violence and you’ve got a winner … but not before a Chelsea fan tries to make nice by offering up his Samsung blue in exchange for Sangyfarha’s red. Fortunately a drunken Syrian steps in to broker the peace.

A poetic statement on football’s international diversity and an American trying to come to grips with riot mentality and a conflicting desire for women in 8-inch heels.

Mutu Bufu’d

Sa ma ia dracu
Sa ma ia dracu

I cannot in any legal sense get my head around this.   In 2003, Chelsea uses it’s newly printed oil mafia cash to overpay Parma for the rights to Adrian Mutu.  Mutu plays for a year, gets caught doing blow, and is suspended for 7 months.  Chelsea decides to terminate his contract, escaping having to pay his wages during the suspension by firing him “for cause.”  So far, I get it.

Chelsea then sues Mutu (through the various sport arbitrators) to try and recover the amount that it didn’t earn by reselling Mutu in the transfer market, and WINS, to the tune of over $24 million dollars.  Wha?  So many problems with this:

1. Where’d they get that figure? It is unfair to assess his market value based upon the inflated amount Chelsea paid, and he certainly didn’t live up to the valuation in his year at the Bridge.  Plus, the rumors of drug use had been confirmed by the suspension, which hardly increases a player’s value.

2. Chelsea didn’t have to terminate his contract and make him a free agent.  I understand why they did, and they benefited financially by not having to pay Mutu during his suspension; further, they gained by not paying his wages for the term of the contract that, cynically, he wasn’t worth.  But again, they CHOSE to forfeit their rights to Mutu rather than try and sell him, even for pennies on the dollar.  In any legitimate tribunal, Mutu is at least entitled to an offset for what they might have been able to get for him, and this is a sum that can be gleaned by looking at Mutu’s subsequent transfer history.

3. This is dangerous precedent.  Mutu was terminated for violating his contract, and has to pay what he would be worth if the club had sold him.  That figure was determined entirely by looking at what Chelsea paid for him.  Isn’t this a way for clubs that spend silly money overpaying for players just to make a splash to get out from under their own stupidity?  City could have terminated Robinho for going awol last year, and perhaps they’ll consider it moving forward if they could get their 55m back from him.  This is not a frivolous concern.

4. His wife is smoking hot.  Consuelo, Soccerati is here for you if you need anything.

Sir Bobby Robson Dies

July 31st, 2009 by Danieldinho | No Comments | Filed in English Premier League, International Play, World Cup

The former English football manager, Bobby Robson, died last night of cancer at age 76. Not to disrespect the recently deceased … but is a World Cup semi-final (in 1990) all it takes to become a sir? Serious question, and I hope this doesn’t make the people of Ipswich hate me, as Robson lead them in their glory days.

Newcastle United: A National British Tragedy

July 13th, 2009 by D.A. Hasselbaink | No Comments | Filed in English Premier League

EU BLAIR

Or so says Ex-Brit PM and Toon fan Tony Blair. For a guy who led through the London bombings, the Iraq War, and W’s presidency, calling the state of a football club “a tragedy” seems a bit excessive. Then again, Newcastle did get relegated…

Everybody Hates Michael Owen

July 8th, 2009 by D.A. Hasselbaink | 4 Comments | Filed in English Premier League

soccerati_michael-owen-manchester-united-_feature

Look yourself in the mirror and say, “I’ve sold exactly as many jerseys in the Man U Megastore as Michael Owen.” Yeah, it’s true. According to an employee, the U’s team store has received exactly ZERO requests for an Owen jersey (in case you don’t know, Owen signed with the squad earlier this month).

If it’s any consolation to the former Liverpool/England national team star, at least he can’t get any less popular with Red Devil fans…right?

It’s a Done Deal

July 1st, 2009 by D.A. Hasselbaink | 2 Comments | Filed in English Premier League

soccerati_cristiano_ronaldo_01

Or it’s a done “world-record setting” deal to be more precise. That’s right, Man U and Real Madrid officially completed the 80 million GBP (how the heck do you make the Pound sign on a computer) transfer of Cristiano “The Bad Guy” Ronaldo from the Red Devils to the Los Blancos.

The done deal comes only days after Real unveiled Kaka as the newest member of Los Merengues (so many nicknames).

Blame It On the Drogba, Yeah, Yeah!

soccerati_luiz-felipe-scolari

Or at least that’s what former Blues coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is doing regarding his sacking from Chelsea. Big Phil feels his demise came about because Didier Drogba, along with Petr Cech and Michael Ballack, failed to show the Brazilian any respect as a head coach.

“The people sacked are always the coaches. The main players already know this. That was my problem at Chelsea. Drogba, Ballack and Cech did not accept my training methods or my demands.”

Awwww, does Big Phil need a hug?

Setanta Loses EPL Rights

June 19th, 2009 by Danieldinho | 5 Comments | Filed in English Premier League

I know I’m pretty new to this whole soccer thing, but I’m pretty sure the above is a big deal. So much for my switching cable/satellite providers to get Setanta. And does this have anything to do with Fox Sports here in the US?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8109954.stm

Apparently the “better” English Premier League provider welched on £30 million owed to the league — and though for a while it looked like an American investor might bail them out (interesting), but in the end that deal fell through.

More from the BBC’s football blogger on where Setanta went wrong here.

Maybe This Will Get Sang to Travel to Vegas

June 14th, 2009 by Danieldinho | 3 Comments | Filed in English Premier League

What better way to celebrate a record-setting contract than to head to Las Vegas. From social scene reports last night:

Dining on Nove Italiano’s terrace was footballer for the Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo. Accompanied by seven of his closest friends, they were all fashionably clad in Gucci attire. To start, the group shared family-style appetizers. For his main course, Ronaldo enjoyed the carbonara and a 16-ounce bone-in filet mignon. Cannolis were sent out for dessert. After their meal, Ronaldo made his way into the kitchen to sign Executive Chef Geno Bernardo’s famous door. Ronaldo and his friends then headed to Playboy Club.

UEFA Champions League Finals: Unicef vs. AIG

May 27th, 2009 by Danieldinho | 1 Comment | Filed in English Premier League, La Liga, UEFA Champions League

GET 85472143MW027_AIG_CEO_TESTIWatchin’ the game … enjoying it thoroughly. And it just occurred to me that Barcelona vs. Manchester Utd. really is a battle of Good vs. Evil, or at least Rich vs. Poor — something that couldn’t be more clear in the two opposing sponsors, Unicef and AIG.

Here we’ve got Unicef, a major international organization that looks out for the poorest children in the world … vs. AIG, the disgraced American banking behemoth with a corporate mission to repay taxpayers all the money their leaders stole/squandered by making as much money as possible off (the fear of) disaster and catastrophe.

Bet on Relegation

May 21st, 2009 by Danieldinho | No Comments | Filed in Bet on Soccer, English Premier League, Major League Soccer, United Soccer Leagues

It’s getting near that fun relegation time in the EPL season … one of the things that, frankly, got me hooked on soccer. Though I know it will be a while before MLS and USL are ready for that element, can you imagine how exciting baseball would become — major and minor league — if they had relegation?

Here’s a good article on wagering the end of the season for the bottom of the table.

Online Gambling on Football Dot Com

bolton-kit

The connection between online gambling and soccer continues to grow in prominence — damn, I really need to learn to bet on soccer — with 188Bet becoming the first two-team kit sponsor in the EPL … their brand soon to be on both Wigan and Bolton. In a two-year deal, gone is JJB Sports and Gone-ish is Reebok.

188Bet-Bolton and 188Bet-Wigan join Mansion-Tottenham and SBOBET-West Ham … making online gambling outfits the torso sponsor of 20 percent of the EPL.

PokerStars, of course, recently entered into Mexico’s Primera Division with FC Chivas, PartyBets has a Coca-Cola team with Leyton Orient, and of course the big boys, Bwin, have Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Bayern Munich. I’m almost sure I’m forgetting a few others …

188Bet, interestingly enough, is an online gambling op that currently draws 80 percent of its customers from the Asian market, and it’s just a coincidence that the new Bolton jersey image above happens to be sized at 188 pixels

The New Drinking Age at Tottenham is…203 Years Old

Following the boozy arrest of defender Ledley King, Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Harry Redknapp, plans to instill a club-wide ban on alcohol next season.

In future news, Totttenham Hotspur fail to sign any players with a desire to get laid.

PS If you plan on getting stumble bum drunk and tossed out of a nightclub, probably not the best idea to wear suits with your team’s logo on the lapel.

Soccer in American Culture

April 15th, 2009 by Danieldinho | No Comments | Filed in English Premier League

American fans of European football are starting to (proudly) come out of the closet … Here’s a fun exchange a couple days ago that you never woulda seen in 2007:

I was a fan of “Morning Joe” even before I knew Scarborough was a Liverpool lover who unsuccessfully predicted a 3-0 win for the Reds. Mix in his cohort’s suicide jokes about American soccer coverage and I think we all can see where this is going.

Reflecting on Gallas

April 12th, 2009 by HuffCity | 2 Comments | Filed in English Premier League, Uncategorized

Arsenal star defender William Gallas may be out for the season, but you can still catch him ridin’ dirty.

As they say, you can’t buy class, even if you can afford a $600,000 car.

Is Wigan the New Aston Villa?

April 12th, 2009 by Danieldinho | 1 Comment | Filed in English Premier League

That’s what I was thinking while watching the replay of Arsenal vs. Wigan, with the Latics ahead of the Gooners 1-0 … but then they just missed a virtually open-goal opportunity at the start of the second half, and from there it was all downhill. Arsenal snuck one in to tie — looked offsides to me, but no one save for the Wigan defenders even raised a stink about it — and then another goal, and another, and another: total collapse.

Crap. I’ve always liked Wigan, too … was so ready to sell out my beloved Aston Villa to jump back on the Wigan bandwagon … but with them not only losing to Arsenal but getting crushed by them and failing to hold it together when it all really counted … I wondered … well actually, I realized my original hedline still applied.

It’s Go Time

April 8th, 2009 by Sangy Farha | No Comments | Filed in English Premier League

Due to travel restrictions imposed by the UN, Interpol, and the Texas Board of Corrections the Dallas office of Soccerati is prohibited from traveling overseas for the next two years.  So in order to catch all the big games of the Champions League we are forced to watch on the telly.  Luckily for us there is a great bar called the Mini-Bar that is cozy, football friendly, and has an amazing selection of beer.  So with a cast of characters that includes disparate members of the Batfaces, and those I’m convinced are Basques separatists, Soccerati is going through the pain of seeing Liverpool give up an away goal to the Chavs of Chelsea.  That game is still tied, but what is occurring in Barcelona right now to a Bayern side is clearing payback for Guernica and the Condor Legion.  Great second halves to come.
